I'm going to be going on a road trip pretty soon.  I would like to ask what cheap hotel chain has the best value?

If I can figure out where the best place to stay is (lowest cost + cleanest rooms) then I will see if there is a loyalty program I should join before leaving.

My initial thought is that Choice Hotels will be my best option.  My parents stay with them a lot when they are on road trips and they have a loyalty program.  I would also consider Motel 6, Holiday Inn, etc...

Any thoughts on this issue would be appreciated.

I don't have a good answer for you, but one other thing to consider is that many cheap hotel chains are located next to each other and compete with each other.  I have gone to the front desk of two or three hotels telling them that I plan to stay the night in one of the hotels.  I then ask them what their lowest price is.  Sometimes (if I have internet access) I will check Hotwire and then tell the front desk that the other hotel has offered me a night at $40 or whatever the Hotwire price is.  Sometimes the front desk person will ask their manager and ok the price.  To the hotel, a lower price (that is still above their break even point) is better than losing the sale completely to the hotel across the street.  If you have the time, it is worth trying to bargain.
